The patient may need to continue using the sequential compression device at home. Pneumatic compression devices consist of an inflatable garment for the arm or leg and an electrical pneumatic pump that fills the garment with compressed. In contrast to an Esmarch bandage, the thighhigh intermittent sequential compression device (SCD) (Kendall Health Care Products, Mansfield, MA, USA) prevents pooling of blood in the lower limbs by producing a 12s period of compression at a preset pressure followed by a 60s period of decompression.
